A Vision Coming True: How the Future of Wellness is Taking Shape

BY: Maggie Gough • COO | WELCOA

In 2018 WELCOA invited a handful of industry leaders to participate in a weekend retreat to build healthy connections and spend some time shaping the future of the industry.

A Vision of the Future

One of the activities the leaders were asked to deliver was a draft of the beginning of an article in the year 2030, featured in The Atlantic, about the industry itself. Here is what one attendee wrote:

“Corporate wellness, once known for shaming employees for poor health, has become the industry that saved itself and subsequently saved the American workforce. Facing criticism and cynicism within their industry, small groups of jaded experts came together to discuss their frustrations and hopes for transformational change. Recognizing their own need for well-being and what would create healthy change for themselves, the paradigm began to shift. Honoring their personal need for authenticity and connection for optimal growth, they began leading the most profound shift in today’s businesses and workforce.”

Wellness in Today’s Landscape

Fast forward five years, and the Surgeon General made this a top priority of his office. At WELCOA, we’re proud to have been on this journey to recreate the work of corporate wellness. We’re glad you’re here with us. Today’s body of work is about creating organizations where work is designed for well-being. While that might sound like a lofty goal that is too broad to act on, there is a science and pathway to this work.

In 2022, alongside the release of the Surgeon General’s framework, WELCOA asserted once again that designing employee well-being is a practice and a discipline. It has a core methodology that can be taught to any professional and implemented by any organization.
“Today’s body of work is about creating organizations where work is designed for well-being.”

How to Create Companies that Thrive

For three decades, WELCOA has collected data about how businesses intersect with and impact employee well-being. Right now, many organizations struggle to conceptualize the roadmap to creating a company where employees can thrive in a complex landscape of mental health crises, great resignation, and quiet quitting. However, businesses that follow evidenced-based core methodology like the WELCOA Well Workplace Process™ have already begun responding to employee well-being and mental health through a much more intentional lens that delivers strategic progress.

We’re excited to continue developing businesses and leaders to deliver better outcomes for employee wellness.
