As a child, I remember going to my mom’s “company picnics”. All the employees and their families (including pets) came together for a day of BBQs, games, and celebrations. As a kid, I loved the water balloon tosses and three-legged races. Now as an adult I realize there was so much more to those off-site gatherings. Whether it was apparent or not, things like engagement and connection were constantly at work. These hot topics of “engagement”, “social well-being”, and “D&I” weren’t talked about because they were instinctually built into the company culture.
Maybe these picnics are a thing of the past for most organizations but that does not mean we can’t reproduce those key components that build a strong workplace community. Connections and lasting relationships are instrumental to feeling a sense of belonging and commitment to our organization. Let’s learn from our past and become the wellness barbeque masters of our organizations.
Together we can make social well-being just as popular as those 10,000-step challenges and meditation apps. Studies done by OC Tanner show employees want three things from their employer for connection:
A sense of well-being and belonging
A meaningful connection with their second families (co-workers)
To be a part of something bigger than themselves.
If you are looking for a fun-filled session that is sure to satisfy your social appetite please join me, Jesse Gavin, on Wednesday August 28 from 2:00-3:30pm the WELCOA Summit in Philadelphia, PA.
Becoming Uncomfortably Comfortable
Effectively Engaging the Disengaged
We seem to be moving away from personal and in-person connections because of social media, technology and social norms. At the same time we are realizing the impact that an engaged workforce can have on the overall landscape of our corporate environment. Employee engagement is a huge buzz-word and the wellness industry is scrambling to offer solutions. Come join the conversation and together we will raise the bar of human living through employee connections.
Attend this year’s WELCOA Summit, August 26 – 28 at the Loews Hotel in Philadelphia, PA and create the wellness program of your dreams.
A new report from the U.S. surgeon general’s office confirms equal progress has not been made to reduce cigarette smoking and secondhand smoke exposure among all groups in the U.S. Cigarette smoking has declined by more than 70% in the U.S. since the 1960s, yet smoking is still the leading cause of preventable death. Let’s face it: We’re (still) lonely. In fact, one in five employees worldwide currently feels lonely at work. One factor contributing to this loneliness epidemic may be a lack of friendships. Having friends at work can make or break our overall job satisfaction, and for many adults, the workplace is where we tend to cultivate…
’Tis the season to socialize, celebrate, be merry—and for many, to be stressed. The holiday season can be complex, blending joyous emotions with feelings of sadness, frustration or even anger. According to the American Psychiatric Association (APA), 28% of Americans report feeling more stressed this holiday season compared to last year. Other studies show that…
